Q. How do I apply for internship in WA?

A. If you are a final year medical student from an accredited Australian or New Zealand Medical School you can apply to undertake internship in Western Australia. Go to Internship on this website for further information.

Q. I did my medical degree outside WA. Am I eligible to do an internship in WA?

A. Yes. Final year medical students of an accredited Australian or New Zealand Medical Schools are eligible to apply for Internship in WA.

Q. I am an overseas student graduating from a university in Australia. Can I do my internship WA?

A. Yes. International students of interstate medical schools who are not required to return to their home country to undertake internship may apply to undertake internship in WA. Go to Internship on this website for further information.

Q. I am an Australian Citizen graduating from an overseas university, other than New Zealand. Can I do my internship in WA?

A. Under section 11 A C of the Medical Act 1894 (WA), Internship is available to those graduates of a medical school within Australia or New Zealand accredited by the Australian Medical Council.

Q. Is my medical school accredited?

A. The Australian Medical Council website contains current information regarding accreditation status of Australian and New Zealand medical schools.

Q. When do I apply for internship?

Q. Do I apply directly to the hospital?

A. No. Application is done centrally through the Postgraduate Medical Council.

Q. Does the Postgraduate Medical Council allocate me to an intern position?

A. No. The Primary Allocation Centre selects their interns on a merit-based system. Go to Internship on this website for further information.

Q. Can I contact hospitals about doing an internship there?

A. Yes. Please speak to hospitals about their training, education and facilities in order to help you prioritise your hospital preferences.

Q. When do I find out if I have been successful in obtaining internship?

A. You will be advised mid-September. Go to Internship on this website for further information.

Q. What if I don't want to go to the primary allocation centre where I was offered a position?

A. You do not have to accept a position offered by a primary allocation centre. However, the Postgraduate Medical Council cannot guarantee you a position at another primary allocation centre.

Q. When do I have to start my internship?

A. Orientation runs from 11 January 2010 to 15 January 2010, and clinical work commences the week of 18 January 2010. Orientation is compulsory.
