Interns (PGY1)
(If you are currently a PGY1)
Q. Can I stay in my hospital of internship for my first resident medical officer year (PGY2) year?
A. Yes. However, a resident medical officer position is not guaranteed. You will need to apply for a resident medical officer position at your chosen hospital/s when clinical positions for the following year are advertised. Speak to the medical administrator at your chosen hospital/s regarding availability of positions.
Q. I have completed internship in an overseas country can I work as a resident medical officer in WA?
A. Yes. Conditions apply. For further information, visit the WA Overseas Trained Doctors website.
Q. I want to specialise and would like to do as many terms as possible in Anaesthetics in my first resident medical officer year. Can I do this?
A. The Postgraduate Medical Council does not encourage streaming in your first resident medical officer year. Streaming is defined as undertaking more than two terms in a given discipline.
Q. I am having some difficulty coping with the demands of internship. Is there anyone in the hospital I can talk to about this?
A. Yes. Directors of Clinical Training are in each hospital to act as your advocate and ensure that you receive appropriate education, training and pastoral care. Please see your Director of Clinical Training in the first instance. You can also speak to your medical administrator depending on the problem, and of course you can always speak to the Postgraduate Medical Council.
Q. I am working nights and am regularly the only doctor there. I feel unsupported and unable to cope with the clinical decisions required of me. Is this allowed?
A. No. The Postgraduate Medical Council requires that interns are never left unsupervised, and you should report this to your Director of Clinical Training immediately. If the issue remains unresolved please contact the Postgraduate Medical Council.
