2010 Intern Application Process - Information for Applicants
Application Process
When can I apply?
Applications open Tuesday 26 May 2009 and close on Tuesday 23 June 2009.
How do I apply?
You apply online at the WA Job Board website: www.jobs.wa.gov.au. See our faqs on the online application process.
What information is required for me to apply?
The Intern application process consists of seven sections. You must complete all sections for your application to be considered. See Intern Online Application Section.
Who do I need to use as my Referees?
You require two referees and these would normally be Consultants who know you. You should advise them that you would like them to be a referee and ensure that they will be able to speak about your performance. If you are unable to have a consultant as a referee, you may ask a Registrar to be a referee.
What if I would like to do a rural rotation?
There will be an opportunity to participate in the Rural Preference Program which has been organised by the Rural Training Collaborative (RTC) which consists of the Rural Clinical School WA, WA Country Health Services (WACHS), WA General Practice Education and Training Ltd (WAGPET) and Rural Health West.
The Rural Preference Program will allow you to do a rural rotation block of two or three rural rotations that are attached to your employing PAC. This rural rotation block will provide you with an opportunity to work closely with consultants and find about more about the region.
However, your PAC will still offer rural rotations to interns that are not a part of the Rural Preference Program. To express an interest to do rural rotations and be considered in the Rural Preference Program during your internship, you will be able to do so in the intern application process.
Priority Groups – round offers
Eligible final year medical students are prioritised for intern positions in WA. Positions are initially offered to local WA graduates in priority category one. If, following the appointment of local WA graduates, the hospital still has vacant positions, those medical graduates in categories two to five of the priority list will be offered positions. The priority categories are:
- All graduates of WA medical schools who are Australian citizens or permanent residents.
- Other graduates of accredited Australian/New Zealand medical schools who are Australian citizens or permanent residents, or New Zealand citizens.
- International graduates of WA medical schools who are able to fulfill the visa requirements of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
- Other international graduates of accredited of Australian/New Zealand medical schools who are able to fulfill the visa requirements of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
- Are you an International Medical Graduate who has passed the AMC MCQ exam?
When will I be notified if I have been successful?
Applications close on Tuesday 23 June 2009. Notification of first round offers for priority group one will be sent on Monday 20 July 2009. Further notification of offers for priority group two will be sent on Wednesday 5 August 2009. Should positions still be available a further notification of offers for priority group three will be sent out on Wednesday 12 August 2009 and if required notification of offers for priority group four will be sent out on Wednesday 26 August 2009.

What is the next step after I accept an offer?
You must accept your offer by the ‘Confirmation of Acceptance’ due date (ie: Round One = Friday 31 July 2009; Round Two = Monday 10 August 2009; Round Three = Monday 17 August 2009 and Round Four = Monday 31 August 2009).
Once you have received your offer you will receive a confirmation email by the next business day. The contract paperwork will then be sent to you from the respective PAC as soon as possible after your acceptance of your offer. Any further enquiries regarding this should be directed to the Medical Administration of the PAC.
What happens if I don’t accept or decline an offer?
If you fail to accept or decline an offer, you will receive an email confirming that you have declined the offer. Your offer will be marked as declined and you will not have an intern position in WA.
What happens if I am accepted in WA, but am waiting on an offer from interstate?
You can initially accept an offer in WA and an offer from interstate. However, as soon as you accept an offer interstate, you are required to notify PMCWA within 48 hours that you are withdrawing your offer from WA. It is not acceptable to accept two or more offers from various states for more than 48 hours.
Can I apply for special consideration?
No. Should you have any reason that you think should be considered as exceptional circumstances, you should contact PMCWA to discuss.
What happens if I do not receive my first PAC preference? If a subsequent place becomes available, am I able to be allocated to my first PAC preference?
All applications of graduates of WA medical schools who are Australian permanent residents or citizens (priority category one) will be sent to the PAC of first preference. To date, all graduates in priority category one have received their first preference.
If a PAC has more applicants than positions, each applicant will be ranked based on their application. Applicants who were not ranked as successful to the PAC of first preference will have their applications forwarded to the PAC of second preference. However, should the PAC of second preference be unable to offer a position, then the applications will be sent to the PAC of third preference.
Am I able to move PACs if a position becomes available when another applicant declines their offer?
No.
Am I able to swap PACs with another person?
No.
Will I receive an acknowledgement of my application being lodged?
Yes. Once you have successfully lodged your application you will receive an automatically generated response to tell you that your application has been successfully lodged.
