2010 Intern Application Process - Information for Applicants

Internship

What is an Internship?

Internship is a period (usually one year) of supervised education and training in an accredited intern training position within a Western Australian (WA) hospital.

Interns are required to complete 48 weeks of clinical training (exclusive of any time off for sick or annual leave). Ten days of study leave is available within the 48 weeks of clinical training.

The Medical Board and the Postgraduate Medical Council of Western Australia (PMCWA) require all interns to undertake a balanced mix of clinical experience, which will include terms in medicine; surgery and emergency. The PMCWA also encourages interns to gain exposure in a range of health service settings, including large teaching, outer metropolitan, regional, rural and remote and private hospitals.

An intern will be formally assessed during each of the terms. The assessment is an opportunity for interns to discuss their progress against the agreed learning objectives with their Term Supervisor.

Education and training primarily occurs at the bedside (in-service training). Formal educational sessions are provided at each primary allocation centre (PAC) and all interns are expected to attend.

Can I defer my Internship?

Yes. You may defer your internship for a period of up to two years. However, it is recommended that you write to the Medical Board of WA to seek advice.

If I graduated from my medical degree more than two years ago, am I still eligible to apply for an internship and receive conditional registration from the Medical Board of WA?

If you graduated from your medical degree more than two years ago, then you will need to formally write to the Medical Board of WA and request that they consider your circumstances as to whether conditional registration will be granted. The Medical Board of WA can be contacted via email registrations@wa.medicalboard.com.au or telephone on 08 6380 3500.

Please note: When taking into account the two years, the Internship year does not commence until January 2010.

What happens at the completion of my Internship?

Upon satisfactory completion of internship, the employing hospital will issue a Certificate of Experience. This certificate is necessary for the Medical Board to consider granting general (unconditional) registration. Further details on the requirements of general (unconditional) registration can be obtained from the Medical Board of WA.

How do I get Medical Board Registration?

Interns must be registered with the Medical Board of WA prior to commencing internship. The first step for obtaining registration is for applicants to make an appointment with the Medical Board. This appointment should only be made following receipt of final medical degree results and an offer of appointment by a primary allocation centre being received.

Allocation Numbers

In 2010, there will be approximately 260 positions available. These positions are expected to be initially offered to graduates of WA medical schools who are Australian citizens or permanent residents. The remainder of available positions will be filled by eligible students from categories two, three, four and five.
