2010 Intern Application Process - Information for Applicants
Sir Charles Gairdner and Joondalup Hospitals
Overview
Joondalup and Sir Charles Gairdner as partners in the North Metropolitan Area Health Service run a joint intern programme. Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital is located on a 28 hectare medical campus adjacent to Kings Park in Nedlands, 4 kilometres from the central business district of Perth, while Joondalup Hospital is located just off the freeway and train line some 30 minutes north of the Perth CBD.
“Charlies” is a 650 bed tertiary hospital that employs nearly 400 junior medical staff and offers all specialities other than paediatrics and O&G. It is already one of the busiest hospitals in Australia. There will be further substantial growth on the site over the next few years as services move to the campus as part of the city wide clinical redevelopment plan. Joondalup is currently nearly 400 beds and is also undergoing substantial growth and expansion, moving from its current secondary hospital role to become Perth’s fourth adult tertiary hospital over the next few years.
Though nearly all specialities are available in the network, focus areas of clinical practice include emergency medicine, liver transplantation, neurosurgery, oncology/haematology and respiratory medicine.
Term Rotations
We are committed to providing maximum diversity of experience to all interns while allowing some choice based on individuals career plans. In 2010 we plan to offer 100 intern places with 75 positions largely based at Sir Charlies Gairdner and 25 largely based at Joondalup. However all interns will work at least one term at both major sites. All intern years consist of 5 terms. The block rosters are constructed in such a way that all interns gain experience in emergency medicine, general medicine and general surgery as well as exposure to subspecialties such as orthopaedics, plastics, respiratory medicine, rehabilitation and aged care or psychiatry.
Popular rotations are available to Hollywood Private Hospital, Swan Districts Hospital, Osborne Park Hospital and rural rotations to Port Headland Hospital. New rotations are being developed in areas such as Radiology, Psychogeriatrics, Haematology, Rheumatology and Renal Medicine.
Orientation
We run a (5) day paid orientation program in the week prior to the intern year which includes 2 days of on ward “shadowing”. The program is small group based and focussed on practical issues that will be encountered the following week.
Education Program
As well as the important bedside and unit based teaching which is part of the culture of the hospitals, both sites provide a quarantined, structured intern teaching program throughout the year. All interns are able to attend these weekly programs that are supervised by the Directors of Clinical Training and the Medical Education Officers.
Interns are also strongly encouraged and supported to attend a range of modular courses. There is a specific Intern Emergency Skills Training course that all interns will complete during the year. Further courses are available in Team Based Resuscitation, Teaching on the Run and Learning on the Run. There are weekly Grand Rounds or Case Based Clinical Meetings.
Each year group of interns have their own Director of Clinical Training who will follow them into their second and subsequent pre-vocational years.
Postgraduate specialty training is available through fully accredited college programs in all disciplines at one or both sites.
