Fremantle Hospital

Overview

Fremantle Hospital is a friendly 450 bed, 24-hour general adult and child acute care teaching hospital, situated 20 kilometres from the centre of Perth in the heart of the port of Fremantle. The Hospital enjoys an international reputation for its research, medical and surgical services, and nursing expertise and in recent years has set annual records for patient service.

As well as general medicine and general surgery, Fremantle Hospital offers a wide range of disciplines, including cardiothoracic surgery, nuclear medicine, advanced radiology services and is the State Referral Centre for Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine, and superficial radiotherapy. It has a dedicated Paediatric Ward of 23 beds, 66-bed mental health facility and the Department of Community and Geriatric Medicine has full rehabilitation services. Each year, the hospital has about 300,000 occasions of service with more than 40,000 people (adults and children) a year attending the Trauma and Emergency Centre. Fremantle Hospital has Intern, Resident and Registrar positions, and offers training positions for most specialist colleges including basic surgical and physician training and general practice.

Fremantle Hospital has the feel of a large community hospital and prides itself on its friendly atmosphere. The broader community of Fremantle also has a lot to offer with fantastic cafes, bars, restaurants, beaches, markets and accessible housing within walking distance of the hospital.

Term Rotations

Interns are provided with five clinical rotations usually including:

  • two medical rotations such as General Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Stroke, Cardiovascular Medicine, Psychiatry or Medical Reliever term
  • two surgical rotations such as General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Urology or Surgical Reliever term
  • one Emergency Medicine term

Most terms are at Fremantle Hospital. Some terms are based at:

  • Kaleeya Hospital: located a few kilometres from Fremantle
  • St John of God Hospital Murdoch: a private hospital 10 kilometres east of Fremantle
  • Armadale-Kelmscott Memorial Hospital: outer metropolitan hospital
  • Rockingham General Hospital: outer metropolitan hospital
  • Peel Health Campus or Albany Hospital: rural hospitals (these rural terms are optional)

Facilities

Interns have access to a number of facilities at the hospital, located predominantly in the Blue Room (the Doctor’s Common Room). The Blue Room is famous for its junior doctor social events including Friday night drinks and end of term celebrations. Equipped with a plasma TV with Foxtel, pool table, bar, computers, beds, magazines, newspapers, journals, regular morning teas and coffee machine the Blue Room continues to grow in popularity and is a great attraction for all doctors who join Fremantle Hospital.

Support for Interns

At Fremantle Hospital the dedicated Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) staff:

  • initiate regular contact with Interns to ensure all aspects of their work life are running smoothly
  • liaise with Term Supervisors and Departments regarding Intern issues
  • act as an advocate for Interns providing counselling, support and mentoring

Based on your area of interest PGME allocates interns to a mentor for the year. The role of the mentor is to meet with you throughout your internship to discuss and guide you with regards to how you are going, your future plans and career aspirations and any other issues you wish to raise with them.

Another valuable advocate and support network for junior doctors at Fremantle Hospital is the very active Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Society comprising of RMO and Intern representatives. The RMO Society’s other role is to organise a range of social activities for junior doctors.

Orientation

Interns at Fremantle Hospital participate in a paid five day orientation program prior to commencing and have access to online orientation materials, policies and procedures. In addition, departments and units conduct their own orientation programs at the commencement of each term.

Educational Program

In addition to grand rounds, bedside and department based teaching, PGME coordinates the orientation, education and training of junior doctors at Fremantle Hospital. This includes providing RMOs and Interns with a weekly newsletter by email and coordinating a weekly intern tutorial presented by Consultants and senior Registrars on pertinent surgical and medical topics. Workshops offered to interns include Break Away and Restraint training, Paediatric Updates, Sexual Assault Resource Centre workshops, Medical Emergency Team Simulation training and Advanced Life Support Refresher or full 2-day course training.
