2010 Intern Application Process

Eligibility

Those eligible to apply for internship in WA are:

  1. All graduates of WA medical schools who are Australian citizens or permanent residents.
  2. Other graduates of accredited Australian/New Zealand medical schools who are Australian citizens or permanent residents, or New Zealand citizens.
  3. International graduates of WA medical schools who are able to fulfill the visa requirements of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
  4. International graduates of other Australian / New Zealand medical schools who are able to fulfill the visa requirements of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
  5. Other. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) requiring an internship must have passed the MCQ examination to be eligible.

Over recent years the number of local WA graduates has been less than the number of intern positions offered. However in 2009, the number of WA medical school graduates will have increased, therefore, it is anticipated that the number of intern positions available for graduates from outside WA will be reduced.

Process

The Postgraduate Medical Council is the central coordinating body for intern applications in WA, with the Primary Allocation Centres (Fremantle Hospital, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Royal Perth Hospital) undertaking the selection and recruitment process.

The Postgraduate Medical Council will liaise with WA medical school faculties to provide information about the intern application process.

PMCWA is currently responding to feedback from stakeholders to improve processes for Intern Applications. Changes for 2010 are: Amendments to the Selection Criteria – there are now only four criteria that need to be addressed. Responses to these answers must not exceed 500 words per each selection criteria. Applicants can include attachments to their online application. These include a Curriculum Vitae (maximum of two pages) and an Academic Record (a transcript of the degree up to application point).

For further information see our intern faqs on the application process.

Hospital Information

Each Primary Allocation Centre will hold their own hospital information night for medical students. Information sheets on the individual hospitals are also available. For further information see our intern faqs on hospital information.
